A few words about Ipsarion..
Ipsario is the highest mountain of Thassos with its top at an altitude of 1204m.
Gentle mountain crests are spread under the forest roads. The diverse vegetation adorns like a cloak the slopes of the mountain with an abundance of pine, plane, fir, cedar, olive, dogwood and bay trees that soften the harshness of the mountains.
The changing landscape will surprise you!
Olive groves coexist with torrents and waterfalls surrounded by plane trees, whereas fir and pine forests succeed the cedar forests and deep gorges. Sounds from the rustling of the leaves, the hum of bees and the chirping of birds mingle with the sound of waters in a symphony.
There are many hiking trails that lead to the mountain top where the visitors can stay overnight in the beautiful shelter of the Thassian Mountaineering Club after obtaining the keys from the Mountaineering Club or the municipality. Some of the hiking trails require light hiking like that of Theologos and some others require walking following the well-signed path, like the one starting from Potamia.
It has been enlisted in the Special Protection Zone of Natura 2000 network and is a habitat for some species of wild chicken, while it is a passing and station for many other bird species due to the triangle formed between Thassos and the Delta of Nestos and Evros rivers.
It is a destination that will reward you with its beautiful forest trails and the spectacular views to the Aegean Sea.
