A few words about Skala Sotiros..
In the southwestern of the island lies the village of Skala Sotiros. Like all the mountainous villages of Thassos, Sotiros has its Skala, where in the past only a few fishermen families had settled.
Remnants of a small fortified settlement dating back to the Bronze Age can be observed at the foundations and the courtyard of the church of Prophet Elias. It is worth seeing the old olive press with its characteristic tall chimney, one of the oldest on the island.
Today, the village is growing along the road that runs around the island. It was rebuilt after 1976 and in recent years it has experienced rapid tourist development. The picturesque harbor is home to several boats, whereas there is a range of accommodation, tavernas and bars along the beach. In the area operates camping for cheaper vacation.
On the 20th of July do not miss the opportunity to attend the popular event held in the village’s square in honor of Prophet Elias and the homonymous church.
Take the time to explore it and do not forget to taste the best bread on the island produced at the local bakery!
