A few words about Theologos..

The mountainous village of Theologos is situated in the southeastern side of the island.

It is settled along a main road, which becomes wider at certain points therefore creating parking spaces.

During the Ottoman and Egyptian occupation, it was the capital and served as the administrative and trade centre of the island.

It began to lose its glory after Thassos was released and incorporated into Greece in 1912.

Today it has a population of 600 permanent residents.

The cobbled streets and the houses with its characteristic Macedonian architecture and the rooftops made of stone are the main features of the village.

A visit to the waterfalls of ‘Kefalogourna’, the old lime kilns, the oil mills and watermills that still exist in the area, will transport you to another era when man and nature used to live in harmony worrying only about the very basic needs.

Of great historic significance is the mansion of Chieftain Hatzigeorgis, which nowadays houses the folklore museum.  Upon entering the churches of Saint Paraskevi and Saint Dimitrios with the ornate wooden temples, devoutness permeates.

At the tiny cafes make sure to try the traditional preserves with its many varieties such as walnut and fig.  Then head straight to the nearby tavernas for a taste of the local cuisine with the most popular specialty being the so called ‘katsikaki’ (roasted baby goat).

In June, you can experience the enactment of a traditional Thassian wedding, whereas throughout summer various cultural events take place.

The dense vegetation, the plentiful waters and the stone-arched bridge of Epirotic architecture, just outside the village, are a great opportunity for those visitors that enjoy walking, hiking and photography.

It is a special destination that still resembles a genuine mountainous community, with colors and scents of past times, tranquil ambience and unspoilt by the fast living pace of the modern days.
