A few words about Astris..
Astris village is located in the southeastern side of Thassos. Mediterranean landscape, sun, sea and olive groves are beautifully intertwined.
Administratively it falls under Theologos and it is said to have taken its name from the clear starry sky during dawn when the residents of Theologos were heading to Astris for the olive harvest.
It is interesting to mention that the area is of historical and archeological interest due to the ruins that were found here, especially those of ‘linoi’(wine warehouses).
The toponyms ‘Kokkina’ meaning Red and ‘Miampelia’ meaning large vine implies that the area was all covered by vineyards in the past.
Astriotiko or Panagia is the name of the barren, uninhabited isle just opposite Astris, which according to the tradition and historian Herodotus is said to be Sirens’ island from Greek mythology.
Astris has shown improvement in recent years with some very well run hotels established in the area and a variety of traditional tavernas, which serve ouzo accompanied with delicious seafood delicacies.
This is the ideal place for those who want to spend their holidays in a place with excellent climate, ideal water temperature and a startling starry sky to accompany their walks at night.
